A binary operation obeys a commutative law, such as addition and multiplication on the real or complex numbers.
It can also be termed as Abelian operation. |
The first use of the term commutative was in a memoir by Francois Servois in 1814,
which used the word commutatives when describing functions. |
They can be stated as :
Quantities to be added or multiplied can be combined in any order |
In symbols,

ab = ba |
