Question : |
What is the 'Austrian Method' of subtraction ? |
Answer : |
The Austrian
Method of subtraction is generally used by shopkeepers in Europe
while giving change to a customer. In the Austrian Method instead
of Subtracting the amount of the purchase from the amount of
the coin or bill given in payment, they add from the amount
of the purchase upto the next higher money unit, then to the
next, and so on until they come to the amount of the coin or
bill given in payment. |
For Example,
|
If the amount of purchase is £ 3-23 and the bill given in payment is £10-00. They give the customer the following money units for this change.
|
5 pence
and 2 pence to make the sum £ 3-30, then two 10 pence to make
the sum £ 3-50, then a 50 pence to make the sum £ 4-00 and finally
six one pound notes to bring the sum upto £ 10-00.
