Significant Digits is used in context to decimal numbers. The significant digits of a decimal number are those begining with the first one, reading from left to right, which is not zero and ending with the last are definitely specified.
Significant digits can also be called as significant figures
For Example :
.444 has three significant digits
2.8943 has five significant digits
0.005182 has four significant digits
Rules For Significant Digits :
  • Digits from 1-9 are always significant.
  • Zeros between two other significant digits are always significant.
  • One or more additional zeros to the right of both the decimal place and another significant digit are significant.
  • Zeros used for spacing the decimal point are not significant.
